Host Your Own Private Film Festival

What it's about

Instead of the usual 'what do you want to watch' spiral, one of you picks a theme — a director, a decade, a country, a vibe — and programs a mini festival with two or three films. You make proper snacks, maybe print a little handwritten program, and treat it like you're going somewhere. The ritual of it makes watching movies feel special again.

Why it works

It takes something you already do (watch stuff together) and adds just enough intention to make it feel like a date. The theme gives you something to talk about across the films, and the curation itself becomes a form of sharing who you are.

What to expect

Plan on 4-6 hours depending on what you pick. The prep takes maybe 20-30 minutes. The main effort is actually choosing films ahead of time — decision fatigue is real, so do this a day before. Works any season, any night.

How to set it up

1. 01

   A day before, agree on a theme and let one person be the programmer — they pick 2-3 films without veto from the other.

   Write a simple 'program' on paper: film titles, runtimes, a one-line note about each. Handwritten is better than typed.

   Clear the main screen, set up blankets and proper lighting (dimmer or lamps, not overhead).

   Make one themed snack or drink that loosely fits the theme — Italian films get good cheese and wine, a 70s theme gets popcorn in a real bowl, etc.

5. 05

   Silence phones, do a proper 'lights down' moment before each film starts, and between films take a real intermission to talk about what you just watched.

6. 06

   After the last film, talk about which one hit hardest and why — this is the actual good part.
