Fall Forest Foraging & Picnic
Turn the crisp autumn woods into a pantry and feast on nature’s bounty.
Pickup volleyball at a beach or park is an easy, free weekend day activity that combines exercise with spontaneous social fun. Whether you're looking for a casual game or a competitive match, just show up to an open court and jump in with friendly strangers. This weekend day idea is perfect for an outdoor adventure. Show up to an open court, jump in a game, and meet strangers who become temporary teammates.
Find a public sand or grass volleyball court — usually in beach parks, recreation areas, or some city parks — and join or start a pickup game. Bring a decent ball and a willingness to wave people in. These games almost always self-organize, and within an hour you're playing with people you've never met. No reservation, no teams, no league needed.
It's genuinely high-energy and social in a way that organized leagues can't replicate. The spontaneity is half the fun — you don't know who you'll end up playing with. Works perfectly for a group of 4-6 who want to play but is also great for a duo willing to join an existing game.
You'll sweat. A lot, especially on a summer afternoon. Sand courts are harder on your legs and you'll be diving and sliding — wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Some courts have regulars who dominate; if there's already a game going, watch for a rotation and ask to jump in next. Bring water and sunscreen.
Search your city's parks and rec website or Google Maps for public volleyball courts — filter for sand courts if possible.
Bring a quality volleyball (a $25-35 recreational ball works fine) and inflate it before you go.
Pack sunscreen, a big water bottle per person, and a towel if it's sand.
Arrive around 11am-2pm on a weekend — that's when courts are active but not yet chaotic.
If there's already a game, stand near the court and ask how they're rotating players in. It's almost always welcome.
Keep it casual and encourage people to rotate in — the more open the game, the more fun it is for everyone.
Budget: $0–$35
